Apago cigarro após cigarro,
a chávena ainda quente do café,
e o corpo todo à escuta.
No sono entrevi o teu olhar e

ou persigo, movo-me apenas

a tarde à espera do silêncio, onde o teu corpo pesa a
medida exacta do meu desejo.

Sou um animal. Necessito diariamente da transfusão de uma
enorme quantidade de calor. Tocas-me?

Eu morria de ti

Eu morria de ti
Mas tu eras o meu viver

Tu ias comigo
Tu cantavas em mim
Quando percorria as ruas
Sem nenhum destino
Tu ias comigo

Tu davas as tuas mãos
Tu davas o teu carinho
Quando eu tinha fome
Tu davas a tua vida
E eu ficava sozinha no espelho
Tu vinhas com as tuas luzes…
Tu colhias as pétalas
E cobrias as minhas madeixas
Quando as minhas madeixas tremiam de desejo
Tu colhias as pétalas

Tu encostavas o teu rosto
À inquietude do meu peito
Quando eu
Não tinha mais nada para dizer
Tu encostavas o teu rosto
À inquietude do meu peito
E escutavas
O meu sangue que corria
A minha paixão lacrimejante que morria

Tu ouvias-me
Mas não me vias

hei-de um dia levar-te a ver o sol do qual
conheço todas as cores (amarelo etc) pensamos

we are the famooooous five

A ilha Kirrin

cheiro a damascos e pintura quente
e uma luz laminada verde escura
sobre a bicicleta e os páramos
sobre as mochilas, as quintas,
o pequeno almoço inglês, a ilha da Zé:
exacto e enigmático do corpo.

Roupa

Aquela saia roda
como o topo do moinho de pás,
o que em mim confirma agora
que o vento me reveste.

*

Quando depois do nascimento me vestiram,
a roupa então em mim resplandeceu.
Mas estava nua, sem cambraia
ou a memória simples dela nos sentidos.
Nua e solene, com a roupa alheia
em tomo do meu corpo. E ignorava
valor, matéria e as pompas
que entregam roupas e versos ao comércio.
Acreditava só que o gesto amado
de me cobrirem de panos ao nascer
seria a minha glória

*

O pequeno velo de roupa é
o da imaginação. Vestiram-me
para me velar, como janelas afloram
nas casas ou como a palha envolve
medas. As escassas vestes
nas montras eram também
sinais da imaginação. E a linha
nas mãos da costureira assim
imaginada era.

*

*

O tépido calor cobre-me
por fora de tules em flor.
As folhas do loureiro ridentes
assemelham-se ao meu vestido
de verde cassa. Agradeço, pois, às bocas
de parentes os nomes ditos.

*

Todas as roupas usadas
próprias do Verão são aquele
vestido único, porque me haviam dito
que ao entrar pelos olhos
ele me cobria de fulgor.

*

e pairou no vale
esquecida de sombras e bolores.

Mas de repente lembrou-se.

Parecia mal
ser tão feliz assim
a ceifar com a sua foice
ervas e cores.

E então estendeu-se no jardim
a aproveitar para o remorso dos olhos
o orvalho das flores.

I used to think I was making movies for the ears - writing them, directing them, releasing them. Kind of making a fiction in a non-fiction world. Taking the real world and then getting rid of certain things that I didn't want to be there and adding certain things that I hoped would have been there. I was overly maudlin and romantic and I really hadn't grown up. I still very much lived in a fantasy world. But I like that Blue Valentines song. Still play it sometimes.

Blue Valentines

She sends me blue valentines
All the way from Philadelphia
To mark the anniversary
Of someone that I used to be
And it feels like a warrant
Is out for my arrest
Baby, you got me checkin’ in my rearview mirror
That’s why I'm always on the run
It’s why I changed my name
And I didn't think you'd ever find me here

To send me blue valentines
Like half forgotten dreams
Like a pebble in my shoe
As I walk these streets
And the ghost of your memory
Baby, it’s the thistle in the kiss
It’s the burglar that can break a rose’s neck
It's the tatooed broken promise I gotta hide beneath my sleeve
I’m gonna see you every time I turn my back

Oh, you send me blue valentines
Though I try to remain at large
They're insisting that our love must have a eulogy
Why do I save all this madness
Here in the nightstand drawer
There to haunt ’pon my shoulders
Baby, I know I'd be luckier to walk around everywhere I go
With this blind and broken heart
That sleeps beneath my lapel

Instead these blue valentines
To remind me of my cardinal sin
I can never wash the guilt
Or get these bloodstains off my hands
And it takes a whole lot of whiskey
To make these nightmares go away
And I cut my bleedin’ heart out every night
And I’m gonna die just a little more
On each St. Valentine’s day(4)
Don’t you remember I promised I would write you

These blue valentines
Blue valentines
Blue valentines

Innocent When You Dream

The bats are in the belfry
The dew is on the moor
Where are the arms that held me
And pledged her love before
And pledged her love before

And it’s such a sad old feeling
All the fields are soft and green
And it’s memories that I’m stealing
But you’re innocent when you dream, when you dream
You’re innocent when you dream, when you dream
You’re innocent when you dream

I made a golden promise
That we would never part
I gave my love a locket
And then I broke her heart
And then I broke her heart

And it’s such a sad old feeling
All of the fields are soft and green
And it’s memories that I’m stealing
But you’re innocent when you dream, when you dream
You’re innocent when you dream, when you dream
You’re innocent when you dream

We’re running through the graveyard
And we laughed my friends and I
We swore we’d be together
Until the day we died
Until the day we died

And it’s such a sad old feeling
All of the fields are soft and green
And it’s memories that I’m stealing
But you’re innocent when you dream, when you dream
You’re innocent when you dream, when you dream
You’re innocent when you dream

And it’s such a sad old feeling
All of the fields are soft and green
And it’s memories that I’m stealing
But you’re innocent when you dream, when you dream
You’re innocent when you dream, when you dream
You’re innocent when you dream

"Started as a title, then became just a junkyard for uh . . . one banjo and drums there"

Telephone Call From Istanbul

All night long on the broken glass
Livin’ in a medicine chest
Mediteromanian hotel back
Sprawled across a roll top desk

The monkey rode the blade on an overhead fan
They paint the donkey blue if you pay
I got a telephone call from Istanbul
My baby’s comin’ home today

Will you sell me one of those if I shave my head?
Get me out of town, is what Fireball said
Never trust a man in a blue trench coat
Never drive a car when you’re dead

Saturday’s a festival, Friday’s a gem
Dye your hair yellow and raise your hem
Follow me to Beulah’s on Dry Creek Road
I got to wear the hat that my baby done sewed, whoo!

Will you sell me one of those if I shave my head?
Get me out of town, is what Fireball said
Never trust a man in a blue trench coat
Never drive a car when you’re dead

Saturday’s a festival, Friday’s a gem
Dye your hair yellow and raise your hem
Follow me to Beulah on Dry Creek Road
I got to wear the hat that my baby done sewed

Well, take me down to buy a tux on Red Rose Bear
I got to cut a hole in the day
I got a telephone call from Istanbul
My baby’s comin’ home today

Sell me one of those if I shave my head
Get me out of town, is what Fireball said
Never trust a man in a blue trench coat
Never drive a car when you’re dead

Saturday’s a festival, Friday’s a gem
Dye your hair yellow and raise your hem
Follow me to Beulah’s on Dry Creek Road
I got to wear the hat that my baby done sewed, whoo!

Strange Weather

Will you take me across the channel
London Bridge is falling down
Strange, a woman tries to save
More than a man will try to drown

And it’s the rain that they predicted
And the forecast every time
The rose has died because you picked it
I believe that brandy’s mine

And all over the world
Strangers talk only about the weather
All over the world it’s the same
It’s the same
It’s the same

And the world is getting flatter
And the sky is falling all around
And nothing is the matter
For I’ll never cry in town

And a love like ours, my dear
Is best measured when it’s down
And I never buy umbrellas
For there’s always one around

And all over the world
Strangers talk only about the weather
All over the world it’s the same
It’s the same

And all over the world
Strangers talk only about the weather
All over the world it’s the same
It’s the same

And you know that it’s beginning
And you know that it’s the end
Once again we are strangers
As the fog goes rolling in

And all over the world
Strangers talk only about the weather
All over the world it’s the same
It’s the same

Alice falls down the rabbit hole; numerous objects fall past her. She sees a mirror with her name written on it. The mirror breaks and her name is lost.

WHITE RABBIT sings:

It's dreamy weather we're on
You wave your crooked wand
Along an icy pond
With a frozen moon
A murder of silhouette crows
I saw...
And the tears on my face
And the skates on the pond
Spell Alice

I'll disappear in your name
But you must wait for me
Somewhere beneath the sea
There's the wreck of a ship
Your hair is like meadow grass
On the tide
And the raindrops on my window
And the ice in my drink
Baby, all that I can think of
Is Alice

Arithmetic
Arithmetoc
I turn the hands back on the clock
How does the ocean rock the boat
How did the razor find my throat
The only strings that hold me here
Are tangled up around the pier

And so a secret kiss
Brings madness with the bliss
And I will think of this
When I'm dead in my grave
Set me adrift and
I'm lost in your hair
But I must be insane
To go skating on your name
And by tracing it twice
I fell through the ice
Of Alice
There's only Alice

"This is a story about your neighbor And my neighbor And the neighbor you are soon to become I guess what gets me is, I know two or three things about my neighbor And that’s all I wanna know And from that I can build a story First of all, he told me he was from Tampa Well, then explain the Indiana plates to me My neighbor’s name is Cunningham And the thing I think about, with a name like Cunningham, is If you’re a ham, then you weren’t very cunning, were you? That was a very private thought And unnecessary to be sharing with Cunningham But sometimes at night, when I hear things like that I think, what the hell is he building in there?..."

What’s he building in there?
What the hell is he building in there?
He has subscriptions to those magazines
He never waves when he goes by
He’s hiding something from the rest of us
He’s all to himself, I think I know why
He took down the tire-swing from the pepper tree
He has no children of his own, you see
He has no dog, he has no friends
And his lawn is dying
And what about those packages he sends?
What’s he building in there?
With that hook light on the stairs
What’s he building in there?
I’ll tell you one thing, he’s not building a playhouse for the children
What’s he building in there?
Now what’s that sound from underneath the door?
He’s pounding nails into a hardwood floor
And I swear to God I heard someone moaning low
And I keep seeing the blue light of a TV show
He has a router and a table saw
And you won’t believe what Mr. Sticha saw
There’s poison underneath the sink of course
There’s also enough formaldehyde to choke a horse
What’s he building in there?
What the hell is he building in there?
I heard he has an ex-wife in some place called Mayors Income, Tennessee
And he used to have a consulting business in Indonesia
But what’s he building in there?
He has no friends but he gets a lot of mail
I bet he spent a little time in jail
I heard he was up on the roof last night, signaling with a flashlight
And what’s that tune he’s always whistling?
What’s he building in there?
What’s he building in there?

We have a right to know

Estou no ringue

A casa e a rua onde eles pertencem
estão escondidas e todas as mulheres, também,
estão escondidas

Todas as raparigas
